You can choose what to show in the notification and there is an option to include the message, so I'm guessing that allowed some unencrypted incoming messages to be read.

Sibling comment explains. The notification does arrive encrypted and is decrypted by an app extension (by Signal), however, if the message preview is shown, it is stored unencrypted by iOS. It is that storage that is accessed.

it seems iOS will drop previews into an unencrypted section. which, Is how I expected iOS notification previews to work without unlocking the phone

Yeah, I hope they put displays on more things. The trends are weird though, since some things that used to have displays no longer have them; you have to use the app on your phone instead...

Nah to get you to give the “share location” permission while pairing, so they sell that telemetry to data brokers.

Some things should never have had a display. Eg touch screen for car controls.

I recently drove a Mazda with a knob in the center console that controlled the Android Auto display. It was surprisingly usable!

I'm not surprised by this. I gave up on the YouTube Home page, etc. years ago and I only look at the Subscriptions page. I've just found new channels to subscribe to through word of mouth over the years and I have more than enough content to choose from.

Same, but deep down I know that the chronological subscriptions page will be taken away soon, and that’s when I’ll stop using youtube except for direct links to videos.

I'm not sure they would work well if you're listening to loud music or something. Personally, I don't think I'd ever buy a car that uses voice control as its primary interface; I greatly prefer physical buttons.

It actually does work on my Polestar even when music is played, it pause the music while listening. Polestar uses Google voice recognition which is great, but still I hate using it except for rare cases at it is slow and prone to misunderstandings. It is ok-ish for listening to incoming messages though.

Yeah, I just replaced mine a couple weeks ago. It wasn't hard, but it wasn't easy either.
