Digital currencies enable me to send $10 across the globe for less than a penny and Visa charges $0.30 - I have a hard time imagining a future where the system allows for such a large inefficient gap to remain for long.
Not saying that current digital currencies (bitcoin, etc) will replace Visa. Just that they show that this problem doesn't cost 3% of the transaction to solve.
If banks were to adopt some currency system that utilizes a blockchain-like technology, then I expect the currency would be accepted as cash more ubiquitously, but at that point it's all speculation.
