The rust folks should make a Linux compatible kernel and distros that include a stripped down Linux kernel as a compatibility layer for legacy software.
There was actually a proposal to do what he's suggesting in redox at some point, some sort of emulator layer to run linux to take advantage of linux drivers. I haven't followed up to see what's happening with it.
