IMO you are too caught up on the religious part of the teaching [ maybe rightfully so ] and less on the actual message.
The reason why this is so important is because of the preservation of the family. It is undeniable that a two parent healthy relationship is best for children regardless of religion. However religion is the proxy that is used to get there.
