It is possible our (UK/Canada/USA/etc) societies pursuit of comfort/safety has descended into what Nietzsche calls the "last man".

Blinking after saying something is commonly associated with being a good lie detector. Nietzsche wrote that in the 1800s and it's still apparently relevant:
