That's not really a fair representation of programmers. Not all of us have coding sessions that go by like a blur, causing us to lose track of time and everything around us.
It's a fair representation of quite a few of us though. The comment isn't a gross generalization. It's just a way of demonstrating the shared culture of the MIT Lab during that time. Which as it happens is also part of the point of the article.

I used to engage in sessions like that, but now consider them undesirable, so now I make a point not to get so absorbed in coding for so long that I lose track of time.
